With the many ways we can go green and conserve energy,
who would have thought that we could literally go "green" with our buildings, or more specifically, our roofs.
Green roofs are sprouting up everywhere, and no, we are not talking about what color tiles you have.
A green roof is a sustainable rooftop environment created for plant growth.
The benefits of green roofs are widespread and immense.
They provide massive cooling effects over buildings which lowers energy consumption and the need for air conditioning.
A study by Environment Canada found a 26% reduction in summer cooling needs
and a 26% reduction in winter heat losses when a green roof is used.
This rooftop environment also filters pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air,
as well as minimizing the urban "heat island" effect --
this is what happens when traditional building materials soak up the sun's radiation
and re-emit it as heat back into the city.
Green roofs are a relatively new process in North America becoming popular from methods used in many parts of Europe.
Major cities in the US such as Chicago, Atlanta, and Portland have started to utilize this technique
in order to combat heat and pollution.
